Short answer
St Augustine works best as a two-night trip: one evening in the historic district on foot, one evening at your rental. St George Street and the Avenida Menendez restaurants are excellent but crowded and hard for groups, and parking in the historic district is a real constraint. Spending night two at a rental in St Augustine Beach or Vilano with a chef gets you the group meal without the queue.
Night one: the historic district, on foot
Park once and walk. The historic district is compact and the whole point is wandering it rather than driving between things.
Late afternoon is the sweet spot — the day-trip crowds thin out after about 5, the light on the Castillo and the Bridge of Lions is good, and you can get into places that were full at 1pm.
For dinner, groups of four to six do fine with a reservation. Above eight it gets difficult, and the walkable spots on St George Street are small. Book ahead or plan to split up.

Night two: use the rental
Most groups stay either in the historic district itself, out at St Augustine Beach, or across the inlet at Vilano. All three work for a dinner at the house, and all three save you a second night of parking and queuing.
This is the night for the group meal — everyone together, no reservation, no dress code, and no splitting the table. A chef at the rental turns it into the anchor of the weekend rather than a fallback.
It also solves a real St Augustine problem: the historic district restaurants are genuinely charming and genuinely small. Doing one night there with a small group and one night at the house with everyone gets you both.
Locations in St Augustine
St Augustine Beach and Vilano rentals are mostly houses and low-rise condos with decks, patios, or driveways. Straightforward — we need about 10 by 10 feet of flat outdoor space with overhead clearance.
Historic district rentals are the one to check. Some are converted historic homes with small courtyards, heavy tree cover, or no off-street space at all. Send a photo when you enquire and we will confirm the spot.
St Johns County restricts open flame on public beaches, so we cook on the deck, patio, or driveway rather than the sand.
Sunday: brunch and out
Do not overprogram Sunday. Brunch somewhere near where you are staying, a walk on the beach, then drive.
If you have the morning, Fort Matanzas is 20 minutes south, free, and much quieter than the Castillo. Anastasia State Park is right there too.
The thing most people get wrong about St Augustine is trying to do the historic district twice. Once, done properly, is enough for a weekend.

How far ahead should we book?
Two to three weeks for most weekends. Spring break, Nights of Lights season from mid-November through January, and holiday weekends fill four or more weeks out.
