The reunion math nobody does in advance

Family reunions get planned around the house, not the food. Somebody finds a place on Siesta Key that sleeps 18, everyone books flights, and dinner logistics get sorted out three weeks before the trip. That is when the problem surfaces.

Siesta Village is charming and small. Most of the restaurants seat 40 to 70 people total, and in season they are full. A party of 15 needs a private room or a buyout, and those get booked months ahead by weddings.

Splitting 22 people across four tables defeats the entire point of a reunion. So the meal comes back to the house.

Reunions have a structural problem: the age range. You have toddlers, teenagers, parents, and grandparents, and almost no single activity holds all of them at once. Conversation splits by generation within ten minutes.

A chef cooking on a griddle in the middle of the group fixes that for 90 minutes. Everyone faces the same direction, everyone reacts to the same things, and the kids are genuinely entertained rather than being handed an iPad.

Practically, it also means one meal where nobody in the family is responsible. For a reunion where somebody is always hosting, that is the actual gift.

Locations at Siesta Key rentals

Siesta Key rentals are mostly houses and low-rise condos, both of which work. We need about 10 by 10 feet of flat outdoor space — pool deck, patio, carport, or driveway.

Sarasota County restricts open flame on public beaches, so we do not cook on the sand. On Siesta Key that has never been an issue in practice, because the rentals have pool decks and patios.

For larger reunions we sometimes run two chefs and two griddles side by side, which keeps serve time reasonable above roughly 25 guests. Worth mentioning when you enquire so we can staff it right.

What it costs for 22 people

Buffet style at 35 dollars per person: 770 dollars. Two proteins at 50: 1,100 dollars. Three proteins at 60: 1,320 dollars. Kids under 12 are 30. All of those include the chef, all food, plates, utensils, and cleanup.

For comparison, a private-room dinner for 22 in Sarasota with drinks and gratuity generally starts around 75-100 dollars per person, plus the logistics of getting 22 people to one place at one time.

The 500 dollar event minimum is irrelevant at this group size — you clear it easily.
