Short answer
For groups of 12+ on 30A, the realistic options are: order catering trays, hire a private chef, cook yourselves, or split into two restaurant reservations. In peak season most 30A restaurants cannot seat 12+ without a month of notice, and waits at walk-in spots run 90-120 minutes. A private chef at the rental costs roughly the same per person as a sit-down dinner once you add drinks and tip, and nobody drives.
Why 30A dinner is genuinely hard
30A is 26 miles of two-lane road with about a dozen walkable town centers. In June through August, and again over Thanksgiving and spring break, the restaurant supply does not come close to matching demand. Most of the good rooms seat 40-80 people total.
The practical result: parties of 8 or more get told no. Parties of 12 or more get told no even a month out. And the places that take walk-ins only run 90 to 120 minute waits from about 6pm.
If your group is renting a house that sleeps 14, the house came with a kitchen and a deck for a reason. The math almost always favors eating at the rental at least half the nights.
Seaside & WaterColor
Walkable, but the good tables are booked out and the crowds peak right at dinner. Fine for 4, painful for 12.
Rosemary & Alys Beach
Excellent restaurants, very limited seats, and reservations open 30 days out and vanish the same day.
Inlet Beach & 30Avenue
Newer, more capacity, easier parking. Your best bet if you insist on going out with a crowd.
Grayton & Blue Mountain
Locals-favorite spots that are small. Great for two couples, not for a reunion.
The six realistic options, ranked
Ranked by how much of your actual vacation each one costs you.
- 1. Private chef at the rental. Somebody else shops, cooks, serves, and cleans. Nobody drives, kids can be feral in the pool until food is up, and the cost lands close to a sit-down dinner once you count drinks and tip. This is what most 30A houses of 12+ end up doing at least once per trip.
- 2. Catering trays delivered. Cheapest per head. You still set up, serve, and clean. Good for a lunch or a low-key night.
- 3. Cook it yourself. Free except for the two hours of your vacation it takes, plus the grocery run, plus the dishes. Works if someone in the group genuinely enjoys it.
- 4. Split the group across two reservations. Two tables of six is far easier to book than one of twelve. Downside: your group is not together.
- 5. Early seating. A 5pm reservation is bookable when 7:30pm is not. Works with young kids, less so with a bachelorette party.
- 6. Walk-in and wait. Put your name in, walk to the beach, come back in two hours. Only viable if nobody in the group is hungry or under ten.
What a private hibachi chef looks like on 30A
We do a lot of 30A rentals, so here is the concrete version. The chef arrives 45-60 minutes before your serve time with a portable teppanyaki griddle, propane, all the food, plates, and utensils. Cooking happens on the deck, the pool surround, or the driveway. You need roughly a 10 by 10 foot flat area with clearance overhead.
Cooking and the fire show run about 90 minutes. Then the chef breaks down, bags everything out, and the deck looks like nothing happened. Total footprint on your evening: you pick a time and open the gate.
Pricing runs 35 dollars per person buffet style, 50 for two proteins, 60 for three, with a 500 dollar event minimum. For a house of 16 doing two proteins that is 800 dollars, all in, with no drinks markup and no tip on a 400 dollar bar tab.
One thing to check before you book anything
Ask your rental host two questions: is propane cooking allowed on the deck, and how far from the structure does it need to be. Most 30A rentals and HOAs are fine with a portable griddle. A few require 10-15 feet of clearance from the house, which usually means the pool surround or driveway instead of the deck.
Open flame on the public beach itself is restricted by Walton County fire code, so nobody is cooking on the sand. That is not a problem in practice, because almost every 30A rental has a deck or pool area with the same view.
Common questions
Can you get a table for 12 on 30A in July?
Rarely without booking a month or more ahead. Most 30A dining rooms seat 40-80 total and will not hold a table of 12 during peak season. Splitting into two tables of six is far more achievable, or eat at the rental.
How much does a private chef cost on 30A versus going out?
A private hibachi chef runs 35-60 dollars per person with a 500 dollar minimum, all inclusive. A sit-down dinner on 30A for a group typically lands at 55-90 dollars per person once you add drinks, tax, and a 20 percent tip on the full bill. For groups of 12 or more the chef is usually cheaper and always less hassle.
Do you cook on the beach on 30A?
No. Walton County fire code restricts open-flame cooking on public beaches. We cook on your rental deck, pool surround, patio, or driveway. Guests still get the Gulf view.
How far in advance should I book a chef for a 30A trip?
Three to four weeks for a peak-season weekend. Spring break and the weeks around July 4th and Thanksgiving can fill five to six weeks out. Weekday dinners are usually available with one to two weeks notice.
What if it rains?
Light rain is fine — we bring a shelter and most 30A rentals have a covered deck or garage that works. Severe weather means we reschedule at no charge.
