Short answer
Naples season runs January through April and the restaurant supply is fully consumed by residents and snowbirds who book ahead. A party of 12 or more on short notice is close to impossible on Fifth Avenue or Third Street South. Groups renting a house in Naples, Marco Island, or Vanderbilt Beach generally do one or two dinners at the rental, where a private chef costs less per head than a Fifth Avenue dinner and requires no reservation at all.
Naples season is a real constraint
Naples has one of the strongest restaurant scenes in Florida for a city its size. It also has a population that roughly doubles from January through April, and those seasonal residents book their regular tables in advance.
The practical effect for a visitor: prime-time reservations on Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South are gone, and a party of 12 needs a private room arranged weeks or months out.
From May through November it loosens considerably. If you are visiting in season with a group, plan the food when you plan the house.
The honest comparison
Naples is one market where the restaurants are genuinely worth going to, so this is a real trade-off rather than an obvious call.
Go out, small group
Under about eight people, do this. Naples restaurants are excellent and worth the reservation effort.
Private room, large group
Very good if you book early and accept a food-and-beverage minimum. Feels like an event.
Chef at the rental
35-60 per person all inclusive. Best when the group is 12+, has kids, or wants to use the pool deck you are paying for.
Split the week
What most groups actually do: two nights out for the adults, one or two nights at the house with everyone.
Where We Cook in Naples and Marco
Naples-area rentals are mostly single-family homes with lanais and pool decks, plus high-rise condos along Gulf Shore Boulevard and on Marco Island.
Houses are straightforward: pool deck, patio, lanai if it is open, or driveway. We need about 10 by 10 feet of flat space with overhead clearance.
High-rise condos need a ground-level or amenity-deck space rather than a balcony. Most buildings have a designated grill or event area and the front desk can point to it. Worth one phone call before booking.
Collier County restricts open flame on public beaches, including Vanderbilt and Marco. The pool deck is everything, and it has better lighting anyway.
What 12 people costs either way
Fifth Avenue dinner for 12 with wine, appetizers, entrees, tax, and 20 percent gratuity commonly lands 100-150 dollars per person in season. That is 1,200 to 1,800 dollars.
Private hibachi chef for 12: 420 dollars buffet style, 600 for two proteins, 720 for three. Add filet at plus 10 or lobster at plus 15 per person if you want to push it.
The chef is dramatically cheaper. Whether it is better depends on the night — Naples restaurants are legitimately good and worth one or two of your evenings. The chef is for the night when you want the group together on the lanai without a reservation and without driving.
