Why the rental is often the best room you have
This is specific to Key West: the rentals are frequently better than the restaurants for a group. An Old Town conch house with a private courtyard and pool, or a Truman Annex place with a deck, is a genuinely great setting that you are already paying for.
Most groups discover this by night two. You have a courtyard with string lights and a pool, and you are queuing on Duval instead of using it.
That is why a chef at the rental tends to land well here. You get the island setting without the walk, the wait, or the island markup on cocktails.
How it works in Old Town
We need roughly 10 by 10 feet of flat outdoor space with clearance overhead. In Old Town that is usually the courtyard, the pool surround, or the parking pad.
Two Key West specifics. Historic properties sometimes have tight courtyards with low overhangs or heavy tree cover, so it is worth a photo when you enquire so we can confirm the spot. And a handful of Old Town rentals have very limited outdoor space, in which case the driveway or parking pad is the answer.
Monroe County restricts open flame on public beaches, so the sand is out. Not a real constraint here, since almost nobody is renting on the beach in Key West anyway.
Cost comparison for a group of 14
Key West dinner for 14 with appetizers, entrees, two rounds, tax, and gratuity realistically lands 90-130 dollars per person. That is island pricing, and it is not unreasonable given what it costs to operate down there.
A private hibachi chef for 14 is 490 dollars buffet style, 700 for two proteins, or 840 for three. That is 35-60 per person, all inclusive, and you stock drinks yourself.
For a bachelorette or a milestone-birthday group, the gap funds a whole extra night out.
